You’ve been carrying a dream for a Christian children’s book around in your head for months—maybe years.

You know there’s a needed story there, but every time you sit down to write, your brain freezes:
  • How long should it be?
  • Where do I even start?
  • Am I doing this “right” for the Christian market?
  • What if I pour my heart into it and it’s… not very good?

You don’t need another vague pep talk.
You need a clear, practical roadmap.

That’s exactly what The Ultimate Guide to Writing a Christian Picture Book is—a simple, start-to-finish framework to finally get your story out of your head and onto the page with confidence.

  • See the Christian KidLit landscape clearly - Understand how today’s Christian picture books work so you’re not guessing what “fits.”

  • Lay a strong foundation for your story - Get clear on age range, length, tone, and core idea before you sink hours into the wrong draft.

  • Weave in solid theology (without getting preachy) - Ground your story in Scripture in a way that feels organic and child-friendly.

  • Shape a story kids actually want to reread - Craft characters, scenes, and page turns that keep little listeners leaning in.

  • Go from messy draft to real manuscript - Use simple revision passes to tighten your writing and see how it could fall into a 32-page layout.

  • Look ahead to titles, art, and publishing - Start thinking about illustration and next steps—traditional or indie—without getting overwhelmed.

i need this guide!

In this guide, you’ll learn how to:

Every step is written specifically for Christian picture-book authors who want stories that are good, true, and beautiful—not fluffy or didactic.

Writing a Christian picture book isn’t just for the “real” authors—it’s for ordinary believers who are willing to take the next faithful step. Whether you feel excited, unqualified, or a little bit of both, this guide is your nudge to stop circling the idea and start shaping it. The truths God has placed on your heart weren’t meant to stay in your journal or your notes app. They were meant to be told, shared, and read by the kids you love.

I'm a bestselling, award-winning children's picture book author, and I bring more than just author experience to the table for you—I’ve worn many creative hats, from designing wedding invitations to social media consulting to co-founding Risen Motherhood, a ministry that shared gospel-hope with moms around the world. I love a good dream-turned-reality, and I'm here to put our heads together to work on yours. I love books, and I might just love seeing books come to life even more.

I've written several children's books. Among them, the bestselling, "Any Time, Any Place, Any Prayer," which was the winner of the Christianity Today's Children and Youth Book of the Year, and a finalist for the ECPA's Children's Book of the Year, and the bestselling, "Like Me: A Story About Disability and Discovering God's Image In Every Person," which won The Gospel Coalition's Children's Book of the Year.

I'm Laura and I'm here to answer your children's book questions.

hi there!

I've been writing stories for as long as I can remember. In fact, in first grade, I won my first writing award after I entered my story, "Mackenzie's Dog Goldie" in an AT&T writing contest. I still have the certificate and ribbon. (I'm thinking about putting them up on my office wall.) Since that day, I dreamed of being a children's picture book author, but I never actually thought it would happen. But by God's grace, I got where I am today. Now, I get emails and DM's every week from people just like you who are looking for advice and help at various stages of their author journey, but typically their questions require more than what a quick email or DM can accomplish. So, I built The KidLit Lab to answer all the most common questions people have (and the ones they haven't thought of yet). Think of this like my brain in a bottle, taking all my best tips and bringing them straight to you.

Right now, “write a Christian kids’ book” is a vague dream. This guide turns it into an actual plan. Instead of wondering where to start, how long it should be, or if you’re “doing it right,” you’ll learn how to build a real story—step by step—until you’re holding a finished manuscript instead of just an idea.
